Glass art that spreads joy

  • Justyna makes glass objects inspired by her local landscapes
  • She is a master of glass kiln-forming techniques
  • Her practice belongs to a Polish heritage of art, craft and design in glass

"I think the glass craft chose me, not the other way around," says Justyna Ratasiewicz. After completing a master's degree in economics, Justyna worked for several years in this field, developing her passion for glass all the while. In 2013, she began to learn about stained glass and mosaic making by participating in a series of workshops in Jelenia Góra. Captivated by glass, Justyna explored kiln-forming techniques such as fusing and slumping, which she uses in her studio to this day. She opened her studio in 2018. Based in the Giant Mountains of Poland, Justyna is inspired by this region’s ancient glassmaking traditions and beautiful nature. "Joy is the central motive of my glass objects. I see my work as a manifestation of this feeling," she says. As a glass artist, she uses colour and light to express emotions and create unique visual effects.

What was the first glass object you created?
The first one I am proud of, and which took many trials and errors before its final shape was determined, is the Izery vase. It has a wavy shape and is inspired by the landscape of the Izery Mountains.
How is your craft linked to where you live?
The Karkonosze region, on both the Polish and Czech sides, has a long and rich history in glassmaking, stretching back centuries. Glass products from here are characterised by rich colours, unique design and a high level of technical craftsmanship.
How do traditions and innovations appear in your work?
The history and heritage of local crafts are a valuable source of inspiration for me. I had the opportunity to come into contact with traditional glass processing methods during my studies. I try to combine respect for tradition with my modern approach to design to make my pieces.
What do you like most about glass fusing as a craft?
For me, working with glass is not just a craft; it is a dialogue with matter. I like discovering its secrets and transmitting emotions through its form. Glass is an extraordinary material. Its non-obviousness and vast possibilities have always fascinated me.
