Jia Xi Li

Knitter

Everything and the kitchen sink

  • Jia Xi creates knitted sculptures
  • She developed her technique during the Covid lockdown
  • Domestic objects are her source of inspiration

Inspired by everyday objects, from rubber ducks to radiators and flower pots, Jia Xi Li’s knitted sculptures explore the undefined lines between reality and illusion. Born in China and having lived in Vancouver, Shanghai, New York and now London, Jia Xi discovered knitting in New York, while studying at the Parsons School of Design. She chose machine-knitting courses with Professor Annie Larson, “from hand knitting to domestic machine knitting, to dubied machine and Shimakeiki machine”. After completing her BFA in Fashion Design she moved to London for a masters in Textile Deign at the Royal College of Art. For her, “making is a process of thinking and reflecting”, and knitting is the “most comfortable way to express” her ideas and her response towards the external world.

How did you become a knitted textile artist?
I was very interested in textile and fabric manipulation, and when I was still at college, I learned knitting. Knitting has so much potential: I can choose unique thread and yarns to create my own one-of-a-kind fabric with different techniques and patterns.
What inspired you to work with this craft?
From my perspective, knitting is a way of painting and sculpting. Due to its fantastic structure, I can build not only 2D flat work but also 3D space. Knot by knot, through hours of work, endlessly crafting new pieces brings me pleasure and creativity.
Why did you choose London as your base?
London is a city with diversity, and the craft community is highly inclusive and welcoming. More and more young people start their craft career in London. We combine traditional techniques with technology.
How do you achieve that?
I use traditional textile knitting as a method of frottage to record a specific time, space, and memory. However, I use 3D printing and photogrammetry technology to seal my works in a digital dimension (VR space) where people can see them without geographical restriction.
