Somewhere between wood and metal

  • After working with metal for many years, Armand developed a strong interest in woodworking
  • Most of his works are furniture and lighting
  • His favourite wood to work with is eucalyptus

According to Armand Vreshtazi, there is a perfect harmony between metal and wood because of the connection between the strength and endurance of metal and the natural beauty of wood. He was a master in metalworking when he felt the need to experiment with woodworking to create novel designs. In contrast to metal, which he learned with a master for three years, Armand gained all his expertise in wood himself. What Armand enjoys most about this profession is the diversity and creativity involved in creating entirely handmade, one-of-a-kind items. The majority of his creations are furnishing pieces, and he finds inspiration from both the client's philosophy and the space in which the final product will be placed. "In combining these two together," he says "I always gets a round of applause."

Which technique of woodworking is your favourite?
There are many wood processing techniques. What I love is carving because it allows me to be creatively free. It begins with a profound understanding of raw wood and then of how to bring my vision to life.
What is it about your work that people do not usually know?
After finishing a wooden object, we put it in the ward for at least 10 days in warm conditions. This is done because as a living material, wood is affected by humidity, worms or other insects. This is the challenge of a completely natural product.
What was the first object you made?
I still own the quite enormous metal turtle that was my first object. It makes me feel good every time I see it, since it reminds me of my beginnings and all the professional progress I have experienced over the years.
Which kind of wood do you like to work with the most?
I work with wood from Albania, such as apple, walnut, eucalyptus, oak, and cherry. My favourite wood is eucalyptus since it is surprising and difficult to work with. The wood of eucalyptus trees differs in colour from one tree to the next. They can be beige, brown, and red.
