Suzana Hoxha

Carpet maker

Crafting stories in kilims

  • Suzana discovered her craft and lifelong calling at the age of 13
  • It can take three weeks of dedicated effort to handcraft a kilim
  • She uses natural ingredients such as beets or walnut trees to dye the wool for her kilims

Suzana Hoxha comes from a town in Albania steeped in the traditional art of wool craftsmanship. Her passion for beauty propelled her beyond the boundaries of tradition. Guided by her mother's expertise, Suzana inherited the noble craft. She finds inspiration in every corner, transforming her observations into carpets that narrate stories from antiquity to cosmic symphony. From sketching to completion, Suzana is the sole architect of her creations. Her mastery lies in the adaptation of colours, a skill honed through experimentation with natural elements such as beets, walnut leaves, onion skin, and fraser tree. These organic dyes lend her carpets enduring quality, seamlessly integrating them into any setting they adorn. Each carpet requires meticulous work over two to three weeks. For Suzana, weaving carpets is not merely a profession, it is a labour of love.

Do you remember the moment when you first thought of picking up this craft?
When I was 12 or 13, I vividly recall my mother introducing me to the loom. It was a profound experience, one that ignited a deep spiritual connection within me to this craft. Entranced by the rhythmic dance of the threads, I found myself enchanted by the idea that this could be my future path.
Is there a memorable moment in your professional life?
I had an unforgettable experience. I crafted an extra-large carpet spanning 50 metres for a prominent family of politicians in Kosovo, and dedicated four months to its creation. When they laid it down, the family reached out to me, expressing their heartfelt gratitude collectively. It was a moment of immense appreciation that touched me deeply.
What is your advice for young weavers who wish to follow in your footsteps?
Have courage! Embrace the challenges that may arise along this path and refuse to yield to fear. This profession is truly extraordinary. Let not thoughts of profit overshadow the joy of the journey itself.
Could your craft be considered in danger?
Indeed, I believe our craft is facing significant peril. Today's youth are drawn to the allure of technology and instant gratification, often prioritising quick profits over the profound beauty of creation. As artisans, it is our duty to make the transmission of knowledge more captivating and to inspire the next generation to embrace this craft.
