Giulia Rampini

Ceramicist | Gubbio, Italy

The fresh eye of the third generation

  • Giulia's practice is deeply rooted in her family’s ceramic legacy
  • She merges traditional ceramics with contemporary design and a love for the Italian-made
  • Her work is about making obsolete shapes and decorations relevant once more

For Giulia Rampini, the choice to dedicate herself to ceramics, the family business, was not straightforward. Rampini ceramiche is a workshop founded by Giulia's grandfather Pietro in the 1950s, and it was then managed by her father Giampietro, who together with his wife brought the name to a level of international fame. As the third generation in this line of ceramicists, Giulia had always limited herself to 'playing' in the workshop in Gubbio. But in 2012, she decided to start helping out her parents as a willing apprentice. Her turning point came in 2019, when she enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts to study design. This is where she found her path, blending her passion for contemporaneity and for Made in Italy with the family craft.

What inspires and nourishes your creativity?
My father is the one who influenced me the most: he taught me to enrich my cultural background and to always ask myself the why of things. I am also inspired by Italy, its culture, by Italian design – to me, it is an expression of excellence on a global scale. I am always looking for new trends in our ever-evolving society.
What do you love most about your craft?
For sure the possibility of always creating and bringing new stories to life. Each object is tailor-made for the customer. For me, telling the feelings and emotions that pertain to everyone's life is a great honour. Nothing is born by chance.
Is there a specialty that makes your work recognisable?
What has made my pieces recognisable up until now is giving new life to what no longer seemed contemporary and relevant. I produce decorations, shapes and use techniques considered obsolete, so that after my intervention artworks come back to life, under a new guise.
What has been a memorable moment along your professional path?
My thesis project in Design. For me it was a real journey into Italian culture, design and my family's values. I created works that convey all the love and care I had. It was the beginning of a new chapter for the Rampini name, which for me is past, present and above all future.
