Translating concepts into images

  • Alessandro has been collaborating professionally as an illustrator since he was 21
  • He always knew he wanted to be a visual artist
  • His curiosity guides his aesthaetic research

Driven by an early and deep passion, and following in the footsteps of his mother who is a painter, Alessandro Curiello is an illustrator who has already distinguished himself. Having moved from the Southern town of Barletta to Milan, he graduated in Graphic Design and Visual Design at NABA, then obtained a Master in Motion Design and Animation at NID. He likes to give life to the illustrations he creates from scratch. “Dynamism makes everything more engaging and fun,” says Alessandro. He began his career early, collaborating on prestigious projects for Banca Sella, Porsche, Venchi, and Rotary Club among others from the age of 22. From December 2023 to November 2024, the Lettl Museum in Augsburg exhibits 13 animated paintings by Alessandro, in a surprising audiovisual journey.

What inspires you and fuels your creativity?
Curious is the adjective that best describes me. I am interested in knowing new places, and discovering new ideas and architecture, especially through travelling. I often visit museums and exhibitions. I grew up watching a lot of films: I focus on details, the use of colour, the geometry of the shots. I admire Wes Anderson.
Do you have any points of reference in the history of art?
Cubism and surrealism. The former is abstract and elements transmute, while the latter is a movement in which transformation gives new meaning to ideas through forms. In my work, colour is fundamental together with the idea: a considered combination for me. Beauty can be subjective, but if there is a structuring sense, everything can work, given time..
Where does your confidence come from?
I do a lot of research for each project. My style and my colours represent me, my ideas, my way of seeing and translating sentences into images. I do not follow trends. I think about how Gaudí imagined in his head before giving concrete form to his works.
What makes your work particularly recognisable?
My colours, the recurring character in my work, my alter ego, the use of the outline. I try to include these characteristics also in commissioned works. The meaning in my works is important, but without being didactic: I use metaphors instead.
Alessandro Curiello is a rising star: he began his career in 2022
