Breathing nature into silver

  • Genevieve specialises in silversmithing techniques such as chasing and repoussé
  • She holds degrees in jewellery design, jewellery repair and hand engraving
  • She presented an intricate hand mirror to singer Paula Abdul

Genevieve Flynn designs and creates decorative and functional pieces using precious metals, at times working with more than 40 tools to achieve uniqueness and dimensionality. "Passing down my creations as heirlooms, as well as my knowledge and savoir-faire from one generation to the next, is central to my practice," she says. Genevieve has dedicated much of her career to mastering the technical intricacies of working with silver, gold and platinum. Over the years, the scale of her work has expanded from jewellery creations to larger centrepieces. For example, her Two Birds vase was created over the course of three years. Genevieve exhibited her work in the Florence Biennale in 2025, where she received a Designer Award.

Genevieve Flynn is a master artisan: she began her career in 1974 and she started teaching in 2000.

INTERVIEW

When I was developing my silversmithing skills, necessity became my teacher. Each challenging project pushed me to develop my own solutions. This uniquely developed how I fabricate, solder and work metal, forging a practice as individual as the pieces I create.

A proud highlight of my career was representing my work at the Florence Biennale in 2025, where I was honoured to receive a Designer Award. It was a deeply meaningful recognition of my journey as a self-taught silversmith.

Unbound by convention, I push silver beyond tradition. I blend ancient techniques with a naturalist’s eye to create work that is wholly my own. Innovation, for me, means listening to the metal and daring to follow where it leads.

Nature has always been my greatest teacher and my most faithful muse. As a silversmith, I find myself drawn again and again to the living world. In my work, birds, blooms and insects are transformed into silver. Inspired by Art Nouveau’s sinuous lines, I coax metal into forms that feel alive.
