Frida Fjellman

Glassblower

The free spirit behind colourful glass masterpieces

  • Frida is a recipient of the Stockholm City Council Award
  • She opened her studio in 1998 in Stockholm
  • She is a multi-faceted artist who produces a variety of glass artworks

It is impossible to conventionally define Frida Fjellman’s works. Whether a grandiose coloured glass installation with programmed LED lights, playful vases styled as a rabbit, or splendid chandeliers, her objects are daring, ambitious, and irresistible. She draws inspiration from the traditional Swedish design but infuses it with ingenious individuality and know-how of her own. “Being a free spirit is among the things I love the most about practising my craft," she explains. Frida studied at Stockholm’s Konstfack and was mentored by the renowned Swedish thrower and painter Inger Persson. She has produced works on commission for Art Basel, The Four Seasons, and Forbes. Her works are exhibited in Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, Museum of American Glass, and Röhsska Museum.

How did you start practising your craft?
I went to Hellions Folkhögskola, a full-time education preparing for university, just to have the chance to concentrate on art before doing something 'real'. But the craft took all my attention and thus became the 'real' part of my life. After that, I started studying at Konstfack.
What inspires you the most?
I would define it as everything and nothing. Mostly, my inspiration comes from my work itself. One thing takes you to another and so on. Also, being in nature is always good for getting inspired. I believe that nature is the best at creating amazing things.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
Both have an important presence in what I do. I like to use old techniques, values, and objects that are considered traditional and then make it my way. I try to always embrace my own thoughts and ideas. However, critical thinking Is still present when I create.
Can you share a memorable moment in your professional life?
Having my solo show for Hostler Burrows at Design Miami was mindblowing. After that, I made a big installation at NetJet’s VIP lounge for Art Basel in 2016. A funny fact is that when I first saw the email from NetJet about the cooperation, I thought it was spam. It felt too good to be true.
