Stories told with writing instruments

  • Frank makes fountain pens with a focus on authenticity and detail
  • His works often feature copper, a material that develops a patina
  • He cherishes creating one-of-a-kind custom pieces

In his Hamburg workshop, Frank Pressentin handcrafts writing instruments that emphasise meticulous craftsmanship, precision and the integrity of every material he uses. "I define my approach to craftsmanship as 'new luxury'. My focus is not on loud, flashy objects but on authentic, timeless quality and a deep respect for materials," he says. Frank's journey began in academia, but it was the process of building a boat for his family that sparked his passion for hands-on work. He created his first fountain pen using leftover boat materials. Frank’s work is driven by the belief that true value lies in understanding where each piece comes from and the care invested in its creation.

What was the very first fountain pen you created?
I created a fountain pen made from scraps of wood and brass left over from building a boat for my family. That day, I did not set out to create a name and practice for myself. However, the connection between the boat, the Elbe river and the material sparked what would become Elbwood.
Is there a custom project that stands out as memorable?
I was deeply inspired by a commission for a customer who wanted to honour the author Jorge Luis Borges. I melted old silver gaucho knives from Argentina to create a traditional-style cap. This was a poetic act of remembrance and tribute to the writer’s legacy.
What materials do you like to work with?
I find materials that develop a unique patina over time are the most satisfying to work with. Copper is a great example because it darkens with handling and creates a patina that tells the story of each pen. I cherish this process because it adds authenticity, making each piece personal and alive, unlike mass-produced items.
What was key to building your online presence?
Digital sales were new to me when I began. I learned fast, tried different paths and clarified my message. Press coverage and exhibitions were helpful, but a clear and honest stance made the difference. This is what drew people from around the world to my craft.
