Founded in 1915 in Geneva and initially known as Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons, the Maison Caran d’Ache takes its name from the Russian word for "pencil", which itself comes from the Turkish word "kara-tash" meaning "black stone", in reference to graphite. Caran d’Ache has at its core the stamp of being Swiss Made. The excellency of the manufacturing process is translated into elegance, quality of products, and technical precision, making the name an international leader in the field of drawing and writing.
The manufacture remains a family company family up to this day, when the fourth generation presides at the helm. All Caran d'Ache products are developed and manufactured in its workshop located in Geneva. Internationally recognisable by its design, Caran d'Ache offers a variety of products from Fine Writing pens to Fine Arts instruments like coloured pencils and paint. Among its notable innovations are the watercolour pencil and the Fixpencil, the first mechanical pencil with a clutch mechanism brought to the market in 1929.
