Although Denise Jaques trained in textiles at Central Saint Martins, her making always incorporated other craft disciplines. “I am intent on experimenting with materials in an untraditional way,” she shares. The common thread throughout her work is her use of reflection and iridescent elements. Mosaic came almost by accident through teaching textiles at summer schools, where Denise began piecing together hardened fabric with glass, resin and ceramic. Today, her work is built on celebrating contrasts, such as gnarly, volcanic black ceramic set against mirrored, iridised, hand gilded glass. Living and working in Farnham, England’s first designated World Craft Town, Denise's mosaic compositions feature reflective surfaces that shift with every change of light. "My mosaics are speculative pieces that allow me to see how far the boundaries of material can be pushed,” she says.

INTERVIEW
It is essential. I can spend months making enough tiny ceramic pieces before I even thinking of assembling. My studio is organised by material and colour, right down to zip-lock bags. This is laboriously time-consuming, but when I finally lay everything out, I know how much time and love has gone into the work.
Buying off-the-shelf is not something I do, instead I make as much as I can myself. I hand-gild stained glass, roll and texture black clay, fire porcelain embedded with glass... Even if I have not made the base material, I put my thumbprint on it somewhere. Every ingredient matters.
My hope is that my work provides reflections of their surroundings in ways they have never seen before. It is not illustrative, and it changes with seasons, atmosphere, and positioning in a room or space. You really have to live with my pieces to know them.
Some ideas require 10 years of work. I have five bodies of work on the go at the same time, because I do not put pressure on their development. They are in their infancy and need time to grow. My approach is never about trying to force it.
