Mosaic maker

Journeying through life with mosaics

  • Irina enjoys engaging with social initiatives through her craft
  • To her, crafting mosaics helps to look at any situation from a different angle
  • She values the opportunity to intertwine the past with the present in her pieces

Irina Krilo began to make mosaics using classical techniques, and gradually embraced diverse methods, drawing inspiration from nature, ancient art, and societal shifts. Her pursuit for inspiration leads her to visit places with a wealth of original mosaics. Guided by her principle to reduce negativity, increase positivity, and seek the silver lining in all things, Irina leads projects rejuvenating overlooked areas, fostering community collaboration through mosaic creation. With Irina's approach, making mosaics is about stone sizes, perspectives, and life's intricacies. "Functional mosaics prioritise durability, alignment, and polish, while artistic mosaics require suitable use of each technique," she explains.

Do you remember when you first thought of picking up this craft?
In 2010, I was working as an interior designer and was tired of spending too much time in front of the computer. One day, while at the seaside, I picked up some pebbles and began experimenting with them. I created my first mosaic, that was a triptych inspired by a photo of the sunset I took that same day.
What was a memorable moment in your professional life?
Through mosaic art, I befriended the Colosseum's senior conservator Alessandro Lugari. In 2019, I collaborated with global artists on a mural mosaic in Nazzano near Rome, as part of the Pictor Imaginarius project. It was a project fostered by the local museum cooperation. It broadened my artistic circle remarkably.
What materials do you use?
Pebbles stand as my enduring passion. I aim to blend diverse materials for unique combinations, such as glossy candy papers and rubble. Although I use contemporary substances for efficiency, my aim is to one day try using more traditional methods to bind materials without modern chemicals.
Do you train apprentices?
I used to host masterclasses solely for fun, but I craved a deeper connection with those genuinely interested in ancient art. Now, I mentor a small, dedicated group, passionate about mosaic as a hobby. They seek ongoing guidance, and this fosters a meaningful learning journey between us.
