Woodworker | Riga, Latvia

Grains and finishes beyond tradition

  • Rudolfs is a completely self-taught furniture restorer and woodworker
  • His practice was born from the strong connection he has with wood
  • Many of his original works are made for collectors

Rudolfs Janovs balances his restorative works with different types of wooden creations, from huge sculptures to refined furniture and custom tools. Even though he was introduced to craft at an early age, he first worked on renovating apartments before finding his passion in woodworking. "Clients asked me to work on intricate wooden details, unique decorations and custom-designed furniture. Despite the fact that I was not specialised in wood at all, I slowly fell in love with its beauty and challenges," Rudolfs says. With time, he decided to focus solely on woodworking, exploring various grains and finishes. This growing passion led to him designing his own bold furniture pieces and complex sculptures with different materials, through which he pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques.

What was your first project?
My dad was always passionate about tools and crafts, and he inspired me to make my own toys when I was 12 years old. I made replicas of original weapons, and that was the first project I ever sold.
How do you balance between restoration and original works?
Most of my work at the workshop is restorative, which requires a lot of skills and experience. People are very attached to their objects, and they want real professionals to care for their belongings. I create original works when I have time, and it brings me immense joy.
What type of wood do you prefer working with?
Hardwood is long-lasting and requires a lot of precision. It has everything an artist needs, including colour, texture and character. It takes a lot of patience and hard work to make proper objects that honour the grain and beauty of hardwood. Nature's beauty is really inspiring, and learning how to appreciate and use it takes time.
Is your craft endangered by mass produced furniture?
Clients come to me so I can interpret their wishes and needs, and I create custom work that fit their spaces. Those pieces are special and unique. Mass produced furniture does not belong everywhere, especially not in old cities and buildings. Most people that order custom-made pieces want to experience bringing part of their imagination to life.
