Colourful stoneware for the everyday

  • Chela crafts colourful ceramics in her workshop, Takeawei
  • She specialises in handmade tableware, lighting, vessels and sculptures
  • Her designs are informed by her experience as a textile designer

Based on Australia’s Surf Coast in Victoria, Chela Edmunds first studied at Choplet Ceramics in New York before establishing her studio practice, Takeawei, in 2013. Her practice developed over years of working in the studio and taking workshops to hone her wheel throwing craft. Through her process, Chela enters a repetitive flow state to throw simple forms that are canvases for her colourful and patterned glazes. Today, all her tableware is dishwasher and microwave safe for daily use, while her lighting and vessels bring colour and playful form to interior spaces. “I am interested in the beauty of everyday functional objects and how they become a part of people’s lives,” she says.

Chela Edmunds is a master artisan: she began her career in 2011 and she started teaching in 2015.

INTERVIEW

All my ideas and experimental energy tumbled out into the form of a very ugly cup! Since then, I have made thousands of cups, and my work is more restrained, as I do not use all the techniques and glazes in a single piece.

I mainly use a clay that has iron speckles throughout. It is slightly gritty to work with, and I love the contrast against my colourful glazes. I wheel throw most of my pieces, adding hand built elements such as handles. I do slab plates from time to time, and it is nice to move through different techniques in the studio as the weather and drying times change.

Clay is so tactile, and it makes me feel closer to the earth and nature. To me, it is very much like cooking and gardening. I love that connection to life through materials and pieces becoming part of other people’s daily routines.

It is important to me that all my pieces serve their intended purpose and either spark curiosity or offer a moment of beauty for the user.
