In 1978, the Center for blind people opened in the peaceful neighbourhood of Ziat, on one side facing the countryside surrounding Fez and on the other side the majestic ramparts of the old medina. In very large premises, on two levels and a beautiful terrace, the Center welcomes 62 blind men and women. One room is dedicated to hand spinning exclusively by women. Each of the other rooms shelters one or more large looms for a total of a dozen hand looms in the building. The Center is always in action. The pleasant sound of wood and gliding shuttles resounds constantly like music.
The craftspeople who work at the Center for blind people produce traditional futas – a type of large towel – thick blankets, embroidered cushion covers and large pieces of fabric for curtains and djellabas. The prices are very reasonable, and the work is always exquisite and creative. It is quite different from the usual creations, which can be a little bit similar everywhere. This large workshop is opened every morning except on Fridays and the store is also available every morning with constantly renewed stock.
