Threads of meditation
- Ulrike is inspired by nature, especially the Atlantic Ocean
- She uses weaving as a meditation exercise
- All the fibres she uses are hand dyed
Born in Germany, Ulrike Güse is now based in the Canary Islands, from where she works as a weaver. She is entirely self-taught and with a background in screen printing, she hand weaves on traditional floor looms in a workshop located in a historic building in the old part of the village of Ingenio. The natural fibres she uses – silk, wool, alpaca and linen – are all dyed by her, using locally harvested plants and the Canarian cochineal, allowing her to achieve a unique and personal colour palette. Ulrike reinterprets traditional patterns with a modern touch, interlacing hues and textures, creating unlikely combinations of different materials. The essence of her work is that no two textiles are ever the same. Her weaving is done with passion and patience, her creations are a wide range of textile items. Nature and the picturesque alleyways of the village are her inspiration.

INTERVIEW
I loved craft as a teenager and fell in love with the beauty of textiles. They have been a thread throughout my life. I feel a deep need to touch and feel my work every day. To weave for me is like meditating, focusing on the here and now.
I was introduced to the natural dye technique by Nilia Bañares, a local weaver. I consider her my mentor and I am proud to continue her legacy, her eight-shaft loom is part of my workshop. Since 2013, I am officially recognised as a weaver by the government of Gran Canaria.
My connection with weaving involves the senses: the sound of the loom, the feel of the fabric coming to life, the magic of the colours emerging from the dye. I use the Canarian cochineal as a dyestuff, the natural red and pink hues being deeply connected to local nature which I value a lot.
Weaving on a traditional floor loom has not gone through major innovations in the last few centuries and I continue doing so, as well as using natural dyes. Innovation comes from my unique designs and the creation of my own colour palette.
