Moments captured in stone
- Brian uses traditional techniques to carve sculptures that capture and celebrate time
- He designs artful awards for global sports brands and organisations
- The basis of his pieces are formed from materials including natural stone and remnant artifacts
Brian Madden fell in love with the timeless traditions of natural stone and marble while studying abroad as an industrial designer in Milan. He began making pieces that paired intricate stone inlay with gilding in gold and palladium leaf. Whether he is creating awards and trophies or a sculpture that freezes the motion of sound waves in a snippet of music, Brian aims to make the ephemeral permanent. “At the core of my artistic practice is a desire to capture and celebrate moments that might be forgotten, to honour them and try to let them live on,” he says. Led by curiosity, Brian chooses materials and forms based on stories and symbolism, from cast bronze candlesticks to stone inlay furniture and athletics trophies.

INTERVIEW
I love working with people. My approach is very relational. I feel inspired by working with other artists and artisans, and I feel comfortable collaborating with corporate and private clients to affect space and experience through art and design.
Constraints breed creativity. While I am synthesising the problems of one project, my creative mind is working on another in the background. My commercial work informs my fine art pieces, generating the next wave of my personal creative expression.
My work is curiosity-led, highlighting stories and symbols through form and material. My Sonic Monuments series celebrates auditory ephemera, sounds, songs and spoken word, drawing from a wide range of materials, like marble, brass and wood.
I believe art and athletics are spiritually connected, sharing virtues of grace, discipline and style. I started working with stone to honour sport by creating a marble inlay mosaic Jordan sneaker. It has led to the creation of awards for the NFL, PGA and EA Sports.
