A versatile approach to craftsmanship

  • Christophe opened his workshop in 2014
  • He is inspired by observation, curiosity and drawing
  • Two of his pieces have entered the Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix

Christophe Boulanger is a multidisciplinary artist. He was always passionate about creation, but it took him 30 years to finally embrace the life of an artist after a career in advertising. He began by experimenting with drawing and painting, but his natural curiosity rapidly pushed him towards different techniques and materials, including ceramics and metalwork. For Christophe, each exploration is the beginning of a new collection which requires studying a new material, new gestures, and new tools. His latest project began with the desire to draw trees and led him to a forest of hundred-year-old oaks in Brittany where he learned gestures from cabinetmakers for six months. Using this new knowledge, Christophe creates furniture and objects that have since been spotted by Elle décoration and the Parisian concept-store Merci.

Where did you learn your craft?
I am self-taught. A natural curiosity and a taste for learning allowed me to discover and experiment during artist residencies, workshops or professional internships with many techniques related to arts and crafts.
Do you remember when you thought about becoming an artist and maker?
I dreamed of becoming an artist at the age of 10 while visiting a Picasso exhibition. He appeared to me like a magician, and his talent like a huge playground and freedom.
How is your job related to your homeland?
Most of my pieces are made from local types of trees. The solid wood pieces are selected in the local area of my workshop.
What advice would you give to a young aspiring artisan?
Sharpen your eye. Discover the history of art in all its facets. Enrich your inspiration from several disciplines. Always have a sketchbook in your pocket. Experiment. Learn constantly. Ask for help and seize the chance to meet benevolent 'masters'. Find your playground. Share it. Finally, develop the singularity of your work.
