Novel mirrors made the traditional way

  • Beata and Łukasz founded their studio in 2020
  • They create artistic mirror works by combining ancient and modern techniques
  • Their pieces showcase elements of fine craftsmanship such as gold leaf detailing

Beata Ludwin and Łukasz Wołek are focused on redefining the traditional concept of mirrors. Both graduates of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, they decided to combine their artistic expertise to produce artistic mirror works. Beata is an art conservator by training, and Łukasz is a sculptor. All the mirrors they create are entirely handmade and the two artisans work together at each stage of the making process. They specialise in pouring silver and in gilding glass with gold leaf. "Wood processing techniques are playing an increasingly important role in our practice," says Beata. The works of the duo revive centuries-old mirror making techniques, as they are intent on preserving traditional methods. "We breathe a new life into the craft by developing and applying modern techniques, too," explains Łukasz.

When and how did you start creating mirrors?
Beata: At first, I experimented with factory mirrors, but I quickly discovered that this was not the right material for me. Łukasz and I concluded that the only way to work with mirrors was to make them ourselves. Łukasz: We started creating our first mirror designs and compositions in 2018.
How are traditions and innovations interpreted in your work?
Beata: Relying on the techniques of old masters is a nod to tradition. I would call the way these are applied, an innovation. We also use modern solutions in the field of glass processing such as waterjet technology, for example.
Is mirror making an endangered craft?
Łukasz: In my opinion, yes. Automation of production processes, cost optimisation, production and delivery time mean that mirror making using traditional techniques has almost disappeared. Beata: Several decades ago, mirrors were commonly made in glass factories, but this is no longer the case.
What are your primary inspirations?
Beata: I am under the timeless charm of nature, its perfect proportions and colours. The process of creation itself is also very inspiring for me. Łukasz: I am inspired by everything. I think architecture, music, poetry and nature have the greatest influence on me.
