Science and art meet in craftsmanship

Anca creates stoneware and porcelain sculptures inspired by the study of natural elements
Her work is the result of combining scientific research with artistic expression
Through her creations, she advocates for environmental awareness

Through her ceramic pieces, Anca Ion reflects on the impact of humans on Earth and encourages action towards a healthy environment. She earned her degree in contemporary applied arts and studies in ceramics, glass, management and marketing. Anca also developed her craft from artisans Camil·la Pérez, Ramon Fort and Santiago Planella. "I began taking drawing and painting classes in 2007, and later turned to clay to create alternative figurative sculptures that explore the relationship between humanity and nature, art and science," she says. Anca works with science art, or SciArt, which has been essential for her to connect with people on both a rational and emotional level. "I enjoy learning from both fields and seeing the results of others. I recognise that innovations in technology, art and education might be the most effective way to build a more sustainable society," she explains.

INTERVIEW

Catalonia has an ancient ceramic tradition and clay-rich soils. I like to think that through my practice, I do my part in reviving this local heritage. The wonderful landscape that surrounds me is covered in red earth, which I sometimes collect and mix with commercial clay to give my pieces distinctive textures and colours.

I create intricate stoneware and porcelain sculptures inspired by microscopic studies of moss, leaves, branches and tree bark. I often go trekking in the mountains to take samples and photographs. Later, in my studio, I analyse the collected species to reproduce and transform them into ceramic sculptures.

The experimental nature of science art enables artists to understand material properties, predict how oxides will degrade and determine the most effective preservation methods for artworks. Through the fusion of science and art, it is possible to advocate for environmental care.

Art education influences my creativity, self-expression and sensitivity. It also helps me interact with other people, work in teams and develop respect and tolerance. I am now able to discover new ways of experiencing and appreciating culture.
