The many faces of regional Indian basketry

Founded in 1993 by Jesmina Zeliang in Nagaland, Northeast India, Cane Concept is a family-run atelier working with cane, bamboo and wood. It grew alongside Heirloom Naga, parent textile company, which works with 400 women artisans in village clusters to sustain the traditional practice of loin-loom weaving. Aku Zeliang is a second-generation designer carrying forward a family legacy of craftsmanship, cultural preservation and indigenous design. He is creative director of Heirloom Naga Centre, Heirloom Naga and Cane Concept, and founder of Urra Design. These platforms support long-term relationships with artisans while connecting indigenous craft with contemporary design, creating new opportunities for traditional materials, techniques and artisan knowledge within the global creative economy.

Cane Concept developed the Zung Füh basket, which translates to spiked vessel, spearheaded by artisans Khumpi Sangtam of eastern Nagaland and Sanju Turi of Assam. Made in Nagaland, a region with a long tradition of indigenous bamboo basketry, the basket is woven from lei bamboo, a native species valued for its strength and flexibility. Each strip is hand harvested, cured, split and naturally dyed black, then woven in a regional diamond pattern. Cane Concept transforms the basket's ancestral silhouette into a striking sculpture with polished steel spikes rising from the base, recalling ancient forms of adornment.
