SHED is a design and manufacturing atelier founded by Priyanka Shah in 2014, whose practice runs from India to Amsterdam. The makers of SHED create marvellous designs with a vast array of materials. The turn of a small crank sets a carousel into motion and castles, forests, libraries and whole cities become animated. Carrom and chess boards are hand carved in marble and wood, their playing fields set with finely fitted precious stone and metal inlay. Cabinets, desks and shrines hide coloured glass and compartments that open where least expected. The atelier’s work spans commissions, limited runs of collectible objects and a design consultancy.

Priyanka first set up shop in the basement of her family's diamond factory in Surat, the Indian city where most of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished. Its precision machinery and repair systems schooled her in jugaad, the Indian art of improvising with whatever is at hand. Today, SHED's production is in Surat, where a team of 45 designers and makers develop each work through drawings, models and repeated prototypes. Many of the artisans arrived from construction backgrounds and have since honed specialist skills in carving, turning, inlay, glass cutting, metalwork and mechanical assembly. When an existing method falls short, the atelier reworks a tool or invents one, convinced that anything it dreams up can be brought to life.
