Art marquetry in Provence

Corentin Tavernier knew since his teenage years that he wanted to work with his hands. He started out in cabinetmaking training at 16, igniting his passion. He specialised in marquetry and then attended the École Boulle in Paris for four years. Initially aiming to promote restoration work, Corentin shifted his focus to innovate within the marquetry profession, using techniques dating back to the Renaissance and as early as 1600 BC. "Craftspeople are innovators rooted in advanced techniques and a deep knowledge of processes," he says. After working for large companies, Corentin set up his own practice in 2010. Today, he conducts in-depth research on incorporating marquetry into architecture and diverse projects. He offers marquetry services, occasionally restoring and training, but primarily focuses on original creations.

INTERVIEW

I partner with other craftspeople, finding it stimulating and creative. During my training, I loved sharing projects, exchanging skills and expertise. While I mostly work on commission, I also create freely, inspired by paintings, seasons, nature, comics, and cinema, exploring diverse marquetry possibilities beyond traditional furniture.

I use around 400 different woods, each offering unique textures and colours. Marquetry is like wood painting. Veneer sheets tell stories with their veining. I favour ash and olive woods for their shade gradients. My suppliers are in Paris, Tournus, and Spain. I designed a tool to create veneer sheets from customers' wood, maintaining high finesse and adapting to the evolving craft.

Historically, marquetry was practised in Paris, Bordeaux and Alsace, without strong regional ties. I often use ash and olive wood, closely linked to Provence, and create contemporary motifs, sometimes using wood gathered on walks. Since 2019, I have chaired the crafts fair in Pernes Les Fontaines, where my workshop is located.

Moving to Pernes, a village dedicated to promoting and preserving artistic crafts, aligned with my vision of life. My workshop is a dream come true. The warm, kind welcome and support I received boosted my confidence. Now, with about 30 artisans in the village, it fosters dynamic synergies.
