Forging freedom and dialogue

  • Carole makes decorative objects from precious metals
  • She uses shaping and hot assembly techniques from goldsmithing
  • Her work is defined by her artistic approach to chiselling

Carole Serny's journey was marked by a gradual embrace of her true calling. While she was drawn to metalworking techniques from the outset, it took her nearly 12 years to make it her profession. Carole trained at the prestigious Ecole Boulle but realised she could not envision herself working in a traditional workshop environment. This led her to explore more creative avenues like design and contemporary furniture. Several years later, Carole felt a compelling urge to return to working with metal, and she established her own studio in 2019. Here, she crafts objects in precious metals and copper alloys, blurring the lines between tradition and innovation. She sees herself as a bridge between heritage techniques and modern design, facilitating dialogue between artisans and contemporary creators.

How would you define what you do?
From a concrete standpoint, I create objects in precious metals and/or copper alloys for decoration and lifestyle. From a more abstract perspective, I feel like a link between heritage techniques that sometimes struggle to find a place in the world of contemporary creation and the essential players like designers, architects, or today's artists.
Why did you choose this craft as a career?
I discovered artistic metalworking at an open house at Boulle art and design school. I fell in love with the workshop immediately – the sound of hammers and blowtorches, the scents, the objects on display... It felt like stepping back in time and discovering an almost magical profession!
When and how did you start?
During my time at Ecole Boulle, through various internships and interactions with professionals, I did not see myself fitting into the traditional workshop environment. So, upon graduating, I turned to what seemed like more creative fields such as design and contemporary furniture.
What do you enjoy most about your profession today?
The freedom of being the sole decision-maker. The silence of the workshop in the morning. The concentration, precision, the feeling of disappearing into a movement, of losing oneself in the act of creating. Conversely, the excitement and thrill at the start of a new project, at the stage where anything is possible! I love so many things about my work.
