Mineral poetry

  • Thierry explores the functions of a jewel
  • His work reveals a committed dimension
  • He emphasises the raw aesthetics of minerals

Based in the heart of Paris, jewellery maker Thierry Vendome creates unique contemporary pieces, revealing the aesthetic power of the materials. From his traditional knowledge, he masters raw and unusual materials, such as rust, which has become one of his signature products. Thierry learned the essence of the craft alongside his father, the artist-jeweller Jean Vendome, who is considered a pioneer of contemporary jewellery. Through his expertise, Thierry likes to break the order, to question the asymmetry, to cross materials, periods and genres. Initiating new dialogues. His creations also sometimes resonate with current topics that arouse his interest.

How would you define what you do?
I feel on the edge of two worlds. Art and jewellery. My work finds its strength in the choice of contrasting and unexpected materials that I like to merge in an abstract way to bring out rhythm and harmony. Each creation is a way to question the limits between the precious and the ordinary.
Do you master any specific jewellery techniques?
I work with gold according to my own techniques in order to obtain particular materials such as sand gold or pleated gold. I have also developed a specific technique for rusty steel, a raw and difficult material, to reveal all its aesthetic strength.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
There is a big part of imagination in my creations, fed by the emotions I get from nature, minerals and plants. Shores in particular have a very strong affect on me. They are often the source of new desires and ideas for materials, shapes and movements.
How is your craft linked to your home region?
My craft defends French savoir-faire and excellence intimately linked to Paris, the cradle of fine jewellery. Although the art of jewellery has seen its codes evolve, I continue to work by hand, without using wax, it allows me to keep a direct contact with the metal and greater freedom of creation.
