Using the ancient technique of hand modelling, Yun-Jung Song creates unique sculptures and small series that combine human, animal and botanical forms. After training in design and ceramics in Seoul, she moved to France in 2002 to study at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg and the Sorbonne, exploring drawing, paper, wood and clay. Since 2010, ceramics have been her sole focus. Yun-Jung’s work evokes childhood, dreams, myth and memory, inviting viewers to discover subtle, hidden glances in her delicate, intertwining creations. “My upbringing nurtured my creativity. I was guided by a mother with a refined artistic sensibility and a father who worked with clay,” she explains. Immersed in her mother’s Buddhist culture, with lingering shamanic rituals and a totemic reverence for nature, Yun-Jung sees humans as inseparable from their surroundings.

INTERVIEW
I call myself a ceramicist and sculptor. Clay is the medium, but sculpture allows me to express my ideas. Drawing is central to my process. I sketch constantly to explore forms, capture inspirations and refine concepts. I sometimes combine real elements such as forest branches in my pieces, allowing nature to become part of the work.
Much of my inspiration comes from my childhood and Korean heritage. I am drawn to ancient Korean culture, its stories, shamanism, totemic reverence for nature, and the cohabitation of humans, animals and spirits. These memories and beliefs are infused into my sculptures.
Louise Bourgeois has long inspired me. I deeply admire her fearlessness, her commitment as an artist and a woman, and her ability to create without compromise. While our temperaments differ, her courage and vision continue to guide my own practice.
Experiment widely. Ceramics offer many techniques, and exploring them helps you find your own artistic voice. Over time, you naturally gravitate towards the approach that suits you best. For me, that is hand modelling, the most foundational and ancient way to shape clay.
