Sculptures of intention and intuition
- Sui weaves mass-produced materials into organic forms
- She was born in Seoul and is now based in New York
- Her pieces translate the rhythms of nature through abstraction
Sui Park creates large biomorphic sculptures by weaving together small, mass-produced materials such as cable ties, which she often hand dyes. She explores the relationship between nature, material transformation and human experience, working at the intersection of abstract sculpture and craft. Sui's multidisciplinary practice is shaped by her studies in fibre art, environmental design and interior architecture at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design. “I reflect on the fragility of life through the transformation of ordinary industrial materials into porous structures,” Sui explains. “I hope my work encourages viewers to slow down and notice meaningful moments that are temporary or easily overlooked.”

INTERVIEW
The contrast resulting from the transformation of disposable materials into organic, seemingly alive forms is intriguing. The process of connecting these materials is slow and repetitive. Through it, the pieces begin to hold a sense of time, labour, memory and emotional experience.
I begin by experimenting and allowing the shape to develop gradually through repetition, weaving and connection. The process is intuitive and the work evolves as I craft. I am interested in leaving room for unexpected transformation rather than trying to control every detail from the beginning.
It is hard to find a balance between intention and intuition. My process is labour-intensive and repetitive, but I do not want the forms to feel overly controlled or mechanical. I am constantly considering structure, tension, density and balance while allowing the work to develop organically.
Although nature is constantly changing, it always maintains a sense of continuity. I translate its rhythms, structures and processes into abstract forms. Nature offers me both a sense of discovery and a space for reflection.
