Sophie Aguilera Lester started her journey with ceramics in her aunt and uncle María de Andrés and Alfredo Aguilera's workshop. Before dedicating herself to ceramics, she worked in set design and theatre with a fine art degree from the University of Barcelona and a master's degree in fine arts from ESAC. Today, Sophie is particularly interested in processes that require time, precision and a balanced combination of artistic sensibility and technical excellence. "Through ceramics, I explore the beauty, memory and emotional narrative of objects, understood as silent witnesses of our lives," she says. "I am interested in reclaiming ornament, craft and contemplation in an age marked by immediacy. I seek to create pieces that invite the viewer to pause and rediscover the poetry of the everyday."
INTERVIEW
Ceramics are a total discipline in which sculpture, painting, drawing, colour and manual work coexist. I am drawn to the clay’s hybrid character and the enormous variety of techniques and possibilities the craft offers. Years later, I still feel the same curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and discovering new paths.
More than conveying a specific message, I feel the need to establish a conversation. I try to give form to questions, memories or intuitions that accompany me. My pieces do not aim to offer answers, but to open spaces for contemplation and dialogue. I like to think that viewers complete my work with their own experiences.
Ceramics never stop presenting me with new challenges. Each project presents a combination of technical, formal and creative questions that compel me to keep learning. I am very curious, and I greatly enjoy the process of research and discovery. I feel excited when I am faced with something I do not know how to deal with.
Turning craft into a stable profession is difficult. The time and effort put into creations often go without institutional, cultural and economic recognition. It is important to value contemporary works and recognise artisans as custodians of knowledge, vital to a nation’s cultural identity. Craftsmanship both preserves traditions and provides societal innovation and value.
