The many faces of print
- Sharon specialises in printmaking, specifically silks screening and monoprinting
- She has worked on commissions for spiritual spaces, including ark curtains and glass panels
- Her textile pieces are often adorned with accents of metallic embroidered threads
Sharon Epstein trained in printed textiles at Glasgow School of Art before moving to Canada for a residency at the Banff Centre. Her printmaking practice encompasses textile, glass and paper. "Drawing sits at the centre of everything I do," she says. Sharon's large-scale commissions for synagogues, hospices and public spaces have given her the opportunity to collaborate with studios around the world. "Travel is essential to my practice. My work is inspired by the colours and layers I discover in new environments," she explains. Alongside her studio work, Sharon has maintained a diverse teaching practice. Her creations are part of permanent collections in the USA, Canada and the UK.

INTERVIEW
I have made things all my life. My practice revolves around drawing, whether I am working in textile, paper or glass. It has taken decades to develop fluency in what I do, and skill matters greatly to me.
I usually start with drawing and collage, then I move into printing, stitching and layering. Even when I am crafting with glass, I think through surface and texture as if I were making a textile piece. The process is slow and very deliberate.
Glass allows me to express myself differently than textile. I am interested in transparency, opacity and the way light moves across a surface. I collaborate with specialist makers in Germany because the technical infrastructure provides me with the scale and complexity I require in my work.
Travel sharpens my eye and keeps my practice moving. India, in particular, has stayed with me through colour and surface. Residencies in Scotland, Jerusalem and Spain, along with time spent walking and drawing plants, have also shaped recent works.
