A visit to London’s British Museum marked the turning point in Sally Fawkes’ career. At 21, she discovered a fragmented piece of ancient Egyptian glass, a collection of small pâte de verre castings that pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle to tell a story. “Discovering this object was an enlightening moment for me,” she recalls. “I knew that glass could be the means of my expression.” Sally began experimenting with the medium by scratching marks into window fragments, repurposing found glass objects and attending classes to learn formal stained glass techniques. Today, she creates nationally and internationally exhibited sculptures that offer a distinct sense of place, frequently incorporating mirrors into her collaged works. Her art serves as a direct expression of the world, reflecting her observations of our entwined relationship with existence.
