Sicilian traditions meet modern ceramics
Based in Sicily, Ninefifty creates handcrafted ceramic surfaces and cladding using majolica, terracotta and lava stone sourced from Mount Etna. The studio's name reflects its firing process: at 950°C, glazes fuse with lava stone and terracotta, resulting in distinct finishes. Founded by Nicolò, Fausto and Alessandro Parrinello, who learned their craft in a historic local workshop, the atelier blends centuries-old expertise with modern design through their collaboration with designer Margherita Rui. Ninefifty debuted at the EDIT Napoli design fair in 2020, winning the Best New Product Award for its Alphabet Collection.
The environment lies at the core of Ninefifty's vision, with 80% of its electric kilns currently powered by photovoltaic panels, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2030. Production waste from lava stone and terracotta is systematically ground down and reintroduced into the craft. Additionally, water and glazes are decanted in specialised tanks to allow for water recirculation and the proper recycling of glazes.
