Founded in 1920, Fornace Brioni is one of the last Italian companies specialising in the production of handmade terracotta tiles for flooring. It is also one of the few historic companies still producing traditional variegato lombardo, known as cotto variegato. The kiln, which has been in operation since the mid-19th century, is now run by the fourth generation of the Brioni family, after being passed into their ownership in 1920. With Alessio and Alberto Brioni leading collaborations with internationally renowned designers, the atelier has opened up to the contemporary market to reinterpret terracotta with new variations.
In addition to traditional shapes, Fornace Brioni offers more refined and modern lines with a variety of mixtures, shapes and colours, without compromising on technique. They exclusively use natural Italian clays mixed with rainwater, and continue to follow traditional artisanal making methods. Their tiles are shaped by hand, naturally dried and slowly fired in kilns, which replicates the effect of ancient wood-fired kilns. Craftsmanship, tradition and contemporary taste have made Fornace Brioni a point of reference for international architects and designers, making terracotta flooring and cladding a continuously rising trend.
