Ghalia Sebti and Tawfik Bennani met at university in 1990. They are both half-Moroccan and both grew up with parents travelling a lot in Europe and beyond. They decided to settle in Morocco where they felt they have deep roots. Their common passion for Morocco and its exceptional light, its tradition, and its craft, led them to found the workshop Aït Manos in 1995. Their goal was to manufacture, celebrate and modernise the very traditional Moroccan ceramics called zellige. Initially made of clay, zellige become glazed terracotta after firing.
Aït Manos offers a new take on zellige by making different shapes and different colours with an important variety of tones while never compromising on the traditional manufacturing process. Seventy masters work daily on hand making the small tiles while a team of designers develops new styles to expand the offering. In the early 2020s Aït Manos launched a line of jewellery made with small zellige, and is involved in furniture making as well as decoration collaborations with partners worldwide.
