Nare Danielyan creates a unique world of her own through ceramics. As a child, she always loved painting, but when the time came to choose a direction, she was drawn to ceramics and its expressive possibilities. She graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia in Yerevan in 2019. After that, a new path began as she discovered her own artistic voice, inspired by nature, Armenian architecture, ornamentation and personal memories. "I enjoy experimenting with forms and textures, often creating matte surfaces that remind me of the stone textures of Armenian architecture," shares Nare. Constantly searching for new approaches, she spends a long time in the sketching phase of the making process, as this allows her to bring together tradition and a contemporary spirit.
INTERVIEW
During university, I created many ceramic works, but my true connection with ceramics developed after graduation. Working alone in my studio became a kind of dialogue between myself and the material. I was drawn to the unpredictability of the process, the way clay responds, changes, and sometimes surprises me.
It was a vase that became the starting point for much of my later work. I still return to that initial form, preserving its round and soft silhouette while reinterpreting it through different textures, proportions and details. Looking back, I realise that this early piece already carried many of the qualities that continue to define my practice today.
Nature has always been an important source of inspiration for me, as well as Armenian architecture and ornamentation. I remember visiting Noravank Monastery, and later, when I was sketching, much of the details became part of my visual memory.
Sketching is a long and essential part of my process. I can stay in this stage for months, as it holds my impressions and memories. When I begin working with clay, I understand that the piece should have a base and a mouth. Gradually, I add details and handles, until the piece reaches its final form.
