Sardinian nature reflected in clay

  • Mercedes creates functional forms from Sardinian clay
  • Her pieces feature sgraffito-etched patterns inspired by nature
  • She prepares her custom engobes for each individual piece

Mercedes Enne creates delicate and intricately sgraffito-decorated ceramic pieces inspired by the geometric patterns of nature. After training in architecture, jewellery making and graphic design, she discovered ceramics through evening classes. Her studio, Memaceramicart, was founded in Olbia in 2018. Mercedes favours slab construction in her vases, jars and plates. Her process begins with rolling clay into flat sheets before cutting and assembling them into a final form. At the leather-hard stage, she brushes on self-mixed engobes. “I calibrate the density and colour batch by batch before lifting the coloured layer away to expose the clay beneath,” she says. Through the practice of sgraffito, Mercedes applies grids, lines and modular signs to decorate her pieces, which are influenced by the coastal scenery and nature of Sardinia. She trained with Anna Rossi, Giovanni Cimatti, Daniela Levera and Marta Pachon Rodriguez to develop her techniques, and has taught in her workshop since 2022.

Mercedes Enne is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2009 and she started teaching in 2022.

INTERVIEW

I have no formal education in ceramics. I began with a degree in architecture, followed by training as a graphic visualiser and jewellery maker. I built my ceramic knowledge through specialist courses with master ceramicists.

I began taking evening courses in ceramics in 2009 while I was still working an office job. In 2018, I resigned to establish my studio Memaceramicart, in Olbia, Sardinia. From that moment on, I dedicated myself entirely to ceramics.

I prepare engobes from raw oxides, calibrating the density and colour for each batch. I also engrave by hand with precision tools borrowed from technical drafting, and I dry and fire the slab-built forms to maintain their geometry without warping.

I am inspired by growing plants, which I observe over weeks. I record how leaves divide a stem, how veins repeat at scale and how shadow falls on a ridge. These patterns return as engraved grids and modular signs on the surface of my pieces.
