Weaving heritage into contemporary design
At Made For A Woman, natural Malagasy raphia is transformed into intricate creations using traditional braiding, weaving, crochet, embroidery, knotting and macramé techniques. The atelier was founded in Madagascar in 2019 by social entrepreneur Eileen Akbaraly, who envisioned a space where exceptional craftsmanship and human development could flourish together. The contemporary craft studio reflects Madagascar’s rich artisanal heritage, while exploring how ancestral knowledge can be adapted for relevant and dynamic fashion, interiors and collectible design.
A defining aspect of Made For A Woman is its collaborative process, in which designers and makers develop ideas through experimentation and shared expertise. As experienced artisans mentor new generations, technical knowledge and centuries-old skills continue to expand alongside creative innovation. The atelier aims to broaden its work in collectible design, advance material research and strengthen Madagascar’s position as a leading centre for contemporary craft. In doing so, Made For A Woman powerfully demonstrates how traditional knowledge can shape the future of design.
