Felted memories

  • Karen’s needle felting features bold designs of common and nostalgic objects
  • Her work is part imagined, part realistic, inspired by everyday life
  • From beach shells to packaging from locals, upcycled found materials are matted into her pieces

On the south coast of England, Karen's studio draws in passersby who initially believe her works are paintings, before they step closer and discover they are felt. Originally an oil painter, she reconnected with her art following a career as a teacher. At first, Karen created miniature paintings on shells, until she found needle felting. Her series shortlisted by the Royal Academy of Arts was inspired by walking past sheep with her son, and imagining what they could do with their days, from playing the panpipes to becoming acrobats. "The sheep are us. They symbolise the average person,” Karen shares. Her hand felted creations feature everyday objects, from the natural linens on the backs of her works to recycled packaging from neighbours and the community matted into the design.

Karen Gorman is a rising star: she began her career in 2022 and she started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

Wool is such a forgotten material and an amazing resource. It is very versatile and woefully underutilised. Using wool means working with natural fibres that appeal to all the senses through their texture and smell.

It was liberating. I could control the paint a lot more than I can control fibre. I have to accept an element of imperfection. I need to layer fibre so it becomes structural. I can build depth and 3D elements, and I learn something new every day.

Needle felting is a slow art form. I am constantly thinking, but not necessarily about what I am doing. For example, I know I am creating a can of golden syrup, but at the same time the process is so repetitive that my mind is free to wander.

I want my work to transport viewers to another place. The fibre draws them in and connects them with memories of places, like in the Cliffs of Dover piece. People often linger outside of my studio, and I hear their conversations about memories of their holidays.
