Twisted visions in wood
The hybrid art of Henrique Oliveira evokes the contrasting qualities of the urban and the natural, the organic and the structural, as well as art and science via unexpected compositions tinted with the fantastic. Often using materials from the urban landscape, Henrique’s installations highlight the endemic nature of precarious urban occupation. His pieces function as a metaphor for organic growth, revealing the decay present in cosmopolitan cities. Born in Brazil, he has lived and worked in London since 2020. His pieces feature in major global exhibitions including solo shows at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo.
Composed of reclaimed fragments of plywood, the structure presented at Homo Faber 2026 reimagines discarded industrial material as a living, organic presence. The assembled elements form a sprawling body that recalls the morphology of a trunk, a root system, or a creeping vine, suggesting something suspended between natural growth and artificial construction. Across its surface, layers of time remain visible, from the memory of trees once cut and processed into industrial plywood, to their subsequent use on construction sites, their abandonment within the urban landscape, and finally their recovery and transformation into a new spatial condition.
