Based in São Paulo, Brazil, Gianfranco Briceño's multidisciplinary practice spans ceramics, sculpture, painting and photography. His work investigates masculinity and sexuality through a visual language that merges mythology with personal experience. Although ceramics became central to his practice during Covid-19, Gianfranco's artistic vision has long evolved through experimentation and storytelling. He creates sculptures that bridge past and present, drawing inspiration from pre-Inca ceramics, ancient Greek mythology and the cultural heritage of his homeland Peru. "My works reinterpret ancestral symbols through a contemporary lens, inviting viewers to reflect on identity, desire and the enduring relevance of ancient narratives," says Gianfranco.
INTERVIEW
During Covid-19, I spent a lot of time drawing and painting. Eventually, these images naturally evolved into 3D forms. I began taking private ceramic lessons, and clay quickly became the perfect medium for expanding my artistic language through sculpture.
Experimentation is part of every sculpture I make. Whether through colour, texture or surface finishes, I always test something new. My discoveries often reshape the work itself, allowing each piece to evolve in its own unique way.
I am inspired by ancient Peruvian ceramics, which have stayed with me since I visited archaeological sites of pre-Inca and Inca cultures during my childhood. I am also influenced by Greek mythology. The two inspirations allow me to create contemporary narratives that explore masculinity, identity and desire.
Tradition is the foundation of my work, while innovation gives it a contemporary voice. I reinterpret ancient cultures through my own perspective, allowing history and modern ideas of masculinity and identity to coexist within each sculpture.
