Elsa Marceau's path into gemstones began when she joined Paris' Atelier Lemercier, a Parisian lapidary workshop. What was intended as a brief introduction to lapidary work soon became a vocation, leading to more than six years of mastering the art of cutting gemstones for leading high jewellery maisons. "The precision, discipline and uncompromising standards I acquired remain the foundation of my practice," she says. Seeking greater artistic freedom, Elsa later taught herself gemstone carving, known as glyptic art, developing a contemporary language through techniques such as intaglio and cameo. Working with gemstones such as smoky quartz, blue chalcedony and lapis lazuli, she creates sculptural works in which the material itself plays an active role, guiding the final form.
INTERVIEW
The beauty of nature is a constant source of inspiration for me. In gemstones, I often recognise the same shapes and structures found in the natural world, revealed at a different scale. Through carving, I explore these parallels.
Their diversity keeps me in a constant state of exploration. I often encounter a gemstone that immediately suggests a form or a subject, becoming the starting point for a one-of-a-kind creation. I am equally drawn to discovering the techniques and visual effects that result through working directly with each stone.
I choose each gemstone for its colour, hardness and volume, but the stone always has the final say. Its natural inclusions become part of the creative process. As I carve, the emerging form often reveals what the piece is meant to become.
I see no boundary between sculpture and jewellery. I create works of art that can be worn: the jewel and its display are conceived as a single sculptural whole.
