In the suburbs of Libreville, Eddy Mayombo transforms salvaged paper, plasma screens and cardboard into sculptures, lamps and vases. Since starting his practice in 2010, he has championed recycling and environmental protection through his creations. “Within every discarded object lies unexpected beauty," he says. Eddy learned his folding technique, which requires great patience and imagination, from a Brazilian nun. It is inspired by ancestral Asian methods, using up to 5,000 individual nine-fold pieces to create a single artwork. The colours of his pieces do not come from paint, but from the original hues of the upcycled flyers, cardboard and mixed materials he uses. “My craft is a fusion of performance, design and a message from the land,” Eddy says. "Art and design should be accessible to everyone and inspire a new way of thinking about waste."
