The colourful matter of making

Dean McRaine’s moon jars, platters and vessels are extant in a matrix of his own making. Over many months, Dean colours porcelain into hues that are saturated, tinted and blended through moment-by-moment intuitive choices, as he reworks the porcelain. The colourful slices are assembled into a block that might weigh as much as a generous pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Wire, exact as the laser’s light, slices across the porcelain to reveal a millefiori pattern prepared to express the joyfully expressive language of Dean's creativity. The clay is thrown on the wheel or slab-built to produce a vibrant form with a pattern of breathtaking complexity. "Colour is born as matter to nourish the soul," says Dean. "Some might call this magic."
INTERVIEW
Colour is an emotional experience and translates the visual language of the soul into joy. My coloured porcelain vessels are a psychedelic happiness I want people to hold, to feel and to know.
Our local water is provided by the Makaleha Spring. On a recent visit to the spring, I saw that someone had covered the pipes that lead the water to our homes with flowers and that an altar had been formed. Hawaii arranges beauty naturally. I live to do the same, by placing colour beside colour.
Psychedelic moments expand the mind and impress growth in consciousness. I understand from my training in psychology that perceptual mechanisms respond to a complexity threshold. Intuitive guidance merges my hands, the clay and colour into one to offer this expansion.
My art can be vulnerable. I reach into the unknown and bring back something that has never been seen before, which, incidentally, could be good or bad. I never know if I like a piece until it is fired. I am unblocking my own soul and sharing this with you, which also feels vulnerable.
