Crafting flowing forms the Joburg way
Growing up in the forestry town of Piet Retief, David Krynauw learned to use a lathe from his father at just 12. In his early twenties, he began developing timber products – first lampshades, before expanding into furniture and architectural elements. As demand and commissions increased, he began training and employing artisans, establishing his Hartbeespoort workshop in 2014. Here, the team crafts solid wood furniture in the manufacturer's signature organic, architectural style.
Design duo David and his wife Jasmyn maintain a collaborative approach across the studio of just under 50 employees in total. Each piece is produced using the Joburg Method, which is the in-house term defining their flowing forms and interlocking components. A cornerstone of the business is proving the commercial viability of locally grown timber, exemplified in the Granger Bay Pavilion, built in 2025 from trees grown on David’s family farm. Long-term, the team hopes to undertake the entire value chain, from seedling to end user, into every object made.
