A landscape of meaning and tradition

Delhi-based design studio ChippiWara was founded by Tanveen Ratti and conceived as a conversation between contemporary design and traditional practice. The studio creates collectible design, furniture and accent pieces for interiors using marquetry and the art of wood inlay and taarkashi, the inlay of fine brass wire into wood. Both crafts carry a long history in southern India. Since its founding, ChippiWara has worked in collaboration with master inlay artisan Suresh Mohan and his highly skilled Mysore collective. Together they have carried the craft beyond its inherited iconography of gods and goddesses, toward abstraction, the natural world and scenes of everyday life.

Summer Garden, exhibited at Homo Faber 2026, is drawn from the childhood summers Tanveen spent in her grandmother’s garden. It recalls waking at dawn to a garden alive with activity, where a sunbird drinks nectar from hibiscus opening in the warmth of the tropical sun. The work was realised with master inlay artisan Suresh Mohan. In it, hand-cut veneers of timber are assembled with mosaic precision. Every colour in the panel is the natural tone of the wood itself, chosen so that grain alone renders light, shade and fine detail. Through this piece, a personal memory becomes a landscape, carried by an age-old craft into the present.
