• Charlotte creates upholstered furniture that sits between design, sculpture and couture

• She collaborates with industrial factories, craftspeople and fashion designers

Charlotte Kingsnorth's journey into furniture making began when she was 14 years old. She made her first chair by teaching herself to steam-bend veneer over a frame she made from moulds of people's backs. Later, Charlotte studied contemporary design at Buckinghamshire and product design at The Royal College of Art. "I was never drawn to design from an industrial perspective," she says. "It is the question of what happens when you put a blowtorch on unexpected materials, polish sheet bronze until it reads as glass, or arrange the knots on pine veneer to mimic cheetah spots.” Charlotte does not have a set approach to making furniture. She creates mockups in card at a miniature scale and full-size versions in timber. "My practice is fluid and playful, I like to incorporate inanimate objects and make them feel alive," she explains.
