Australian wool in bold tapestry

The Australian Tapestry Workshop is a non-profit contemporary visual arts organisation that specialises in the creation of handwoven tapestries. Founded on a collaborative model between artists and weavers, the workshop makes site-specific tapestries that bring contemporary art into civic and cultural spaces. Since its establishment in 1976, artists have created more than 600 tapestries for public and private commissions. A team of specialist weavers and dye technicians translates artworks from a range of mediums, including photography, painting, collage and digital images, into handwoven works. “An openness to innovation combined with rigorous technical skill lies at the heart of what we do,” explain Sophie Travers and Catherine Jones, the Australian Tapestry Workshop's co-directors.

At the Australian Tapestry Workshop, the process starts with the creation of a cartoon or full-scale line drawing, which is then transferred onto the loom with ink. Each tapestry is woven using the Gobelin technique, with tightly packed horizontal weft threads building the image across vertical warps. Weavers advance around ten centimetres a week, with tapestries taking weeks or months to complete. Yarns are dyed on-site using high-quality, ethically sourced Australian wool. In 2025, the workshop created Welcome to Country – now you see me: seeing the invisible, an elliptical tapestry by Maree Clarke and Mitch Mahoney for Footscray Hospital. The tapestry was designed to reveal its reverse, forming a monumental ellipse overhead and inviting viewers to experience the work from below.
