Stone's authenticity in sculpture
- Anne-Marie mainly works with alabaster and Laas marble
- Every piece is finished entirely by hand
- She enjoys watching the sculpture gradually emerge from stone
Anne-Marie Grimler discovered sculpture at the age of 40, when a fellow sculptor encouraged her to take her first class. What started as a new experience soon became a passion. Today, her work is guided by a close dialogue with the material itself. "The raw stone speaks to me through its shape, structure, colours, grain and transparency," she says. Anne-Marie enjoys bringing out the stone's natural qualities by highlighting its veining or deliberately preserving raw sections in contrast with finely polished surfaces. "These contrasts enhance the material and often surprise the viewer," she explains. "Every sculpture is a unique encounter between the stone and the sculptor's eye."

INTERVIEW
My creative process involves two complementary methods. One begins with a rough sketch, which I allow to evolve throughout the process. The other entails creating a clay model, which I then faithfully reproduce in stone.
Stone carving requires a thorough command of gestures, carving and polishing techniques, as well as a good understanding of the right tools. These are essential skills that must to be developed in order to bring an idea to life and transform it into a finished work.
Stone remains a deeply authentic material. Stone carving is rooted in an ancestral tradition that technology cannot transform. While modern tools can make certain stages of the process easier, they can never replace a sculptor's hand or sensitivity.
What I enjoy most is watching the sculpture gradually emerge. With every gesture, the form reveals itself a little more, as though it had always been hidden inside the stone, simply waiting to be set free.
