Ahmed Alfawzan proudly carries on the tradition of making Najdi doors and windows, characterised by intricate geometric carvings and hand painted motifs. His craft embodies a strong sense of belonging, carries centuries-worth of knowledge and nourishes a sense of community. Ahmed is a fifth-generation wood carver: he inherited the practice from his father, who in turn learned it from his grandfather. Today, he passes on the craft to his son Abdullah, ensuring the tradition remains a living heritage. "I create each piece with intention, balancing tradition with the needs of the present," he says. Ahmed works with local woods such as athel and palm, and incorporates other natural woods such as walnut, teak or beech. Carrying the spirit of Saudi Arabian culture and tradition, his Najdi works always feature the five traditional colours of black, blue, green, yellow and red.
INTERVIEW
A door is more than an object, it is a threshold between worlds. It carries memories, stories and the presence of those who came before us. I often think of my father and grandparents, and the way this craft was practised as a shared act within the family.
Najdi doors and windows are a hallmark of Saudi Arabian architectural heritage. Crafting them is a meticulous process that requires time and patience. The wood is shaped in planks and then sanded. The doors are painted with traditional colours and finished with metal components. Each detail is brought to life in a hand made process.
My inspiration is rooted deeply in the world around me, particularly in the heritage of Saudi Arabian craftsmanship. This cultural language, which I inherited, keeps me connected to a lineage that guides my hands and vision.
It is one of the most meaningful aspects of my journey as a craftsperson. This craft was passed down to me from my father and grandfather, and to see it continue through my son brings me both pride and reassurance. Working with him allows me to pass on perspectives and share the value of patience, detail and heritage.
