African cloth takes the stage
Christine Daron is the visionary behind African Jacquard, a Cape Town-based weaving atelier specialising in home and hospitality linen. After years of cultivating an eye for interiors and growing her expertise in textile design, local materials and African symbolism, she founded the business in 2014. "In our collaborations with hospitality establishments across South Africa, we develop designs that speak of Africa," explains Christine. The collections are designed in-house with an accent on colour, texture and celebrating distinctive African flora and fauna patterns.
At African Jacquard, all the textiles are woven on Jacquard looms, primarily in cotton and linen. A signature combination of Jacquard and waffle weave, arrived at through years of experimentation, gives the cloth a singular three-dimensional quality. Proprietary washing and finishing techniques are applied to achieve a soft, relaxed handle particular to every African Jacquard piece. The atelier employs around 20 women from different communities across Cape Town, and produces exclusively on the African continent, a founding principle of the business' ethos.
