Unbound creations in lace and wood

  • Ágnes combines her lace works with found wood sculptures she carves herself
  • Her process is rooted in the traditional Halasi needlework technique
  • She experiments with materials influenced by recurring themes from her own life

While studying to be a textile restorer, Ágnes Herczeg began experimenting with different needlework techniques. “I saw an object that I liked and tried to replicate it,” she says. Trawling through books to explore and learn new styles, Ágnes decided to attempt something different using the Halasi technique to create intricate and original forms in lace. “I realised that the possibilities were endless and I started to work with wood I found on the banks of the Danube River,” she explains. “Although they are shaped by the river, I have learned to carve and polish them as my imagination dictates." Today, Ágnes' creations bring together wood, lace and wire: they refuse to follow a particular formula and are unmistakably original.

Ágnes Herczeg is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2010.

INTERVIEW

I use a traditional technique in a new way by combining lacework with pieces of wood I find by the river. These intricate creations are usually framed as standalone pieces, although I also make jewellery.

I can express anything with the media I use. Nothing I make is ever the same, as the influence comes from within. However, I do keep returning to certain themes from my life, such as femininity and nature. I take inspiration from my own life.

I never want to be bored with what I do, so I am always trying new things. For example, I had to learn how to work with wood, sawing it, carving it and polishing it to be ready to combine with lace. This is why no two pieces are ever the same.

My next challenge is to work with glass, which will require a whole new workshop. I tend to let things just take their course, so I will have to wait and see where my practice takes me.
